Victor Webster Dishes on Pie, Romance, and Playing Chad in Pie to Die For: A Hannah Swensen Mystery

Victor Webster has played action heroes, sci-fi bad boys, and even dabbled in stockbroking, but he’s never looked more at home than he does in Hallmark’s cozy world of sleuthing and sweet treats.

Returning as Chad Norton in Pie to Die For: A Hannah Swensen Mystery, Victor brings heart, humor, and a slow-burn charm that’s made fans root for his character’s blossoming romance with Hannah.

We had a chance to sit down with him on Zoom to chat about it.

“I feel so at home with Hallmark doing these movies,” he says with a smile. “It’s like a family.”

Victor’s path to Hallmark is anything but typical.

With a background in martial arts that started at the age of nine — thanks to a discipline-loving police officer father — he’s trained in judo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and was even on the verge of joining the military before life took him in another direction.

“I became a stockbroker,” he reveals. “But I had a conscience, and it was hard for me to do that job with a conscience.”

Thankfully for fans, he traded Wall Street for the screen, and he’s now the kind of guy who lights up hearts — and solves murders — on Hallmark Mystery.

In Pie to Die For, Hannah’s latest case hits close to home, involving her mother Delores’s theater rival and putting Delores’s own reputation at risk. While Hannah bakes up clues, Chad keeps order in Eden Lake — by the book, of course — but this time, there’s more in store for him personally.

“This movie, we actually get to go out on our first date,” Victor teases. “You learn a lot about Chad on that date — why he is the way he is.”

It’s a pivotal moment in a relationship that’s been building over several films, and Victor appreciates the patience of the storytelling. “I like the slow burn,” he says. “It gives you something to look forward to.”

Their chemistry on screen feels effortless, which Victor credits to the trust and playfulness he shares with co-star Alison Sweeney.

“She’s such a pro,” he says. “We can ad-lib, improv, throw in new blocking — and she’s right there in the moment. So many improvs have ended up in the movie. It just makes it more fun.”

That spirit of fun carries into a key scene in Pie to Die For, where the whole cast ends up involved in a play. “There’s always a little ad-lib,” Victor laughs.

“Barbara [Niven] does quite a bit of improv, too. It’s always fun because you know something unexpected is going to happen.”

Off-screen, Victor’s love for nature rivals his love of baked goods. Raised in Calgary and known affectionately as the “Canadian Cowboy,” he lights up when Westerns are mentioned.

“Oh, don’t even tease me,” he grins. “We should do a Hannah Swensen dream sequence,” he says, before I suggest murder at a dude ranch or a charity bake-off with cowboy hats.

He’s on board and not kidding either. “I know how to ride a horse. I was raised in Calgary. I know how to two-step. I love country music. Let’s do it.”

Until then, he’s content making his goddaughter proud. “I started doing these movies so she could watch something I was in,” he says. “Now she sits with her mom, grandma, and great-grandma, and they all watch together. It just melts my heart.”

So what can fans expect from this new chapter in the Hannah Swensen mysteries?

“You’re going to see a bunch of things in this movie that you never expected,” Victor promises.

Now that’s a mystery worth solving.
