19 Real-Life TV Couples Who Embody Relationship Goals

Shipping our favorite characters is half the fun of immersing ourselves in television show worlds. “Will they?” “Won’t they?” “Could they even… ?” It keeps us guessing and engaged.

But there are behind-the-scenes connections happening all the time that are delightful #LifeGoals for us mundies who only dream of Hollywood happy endings.

Check out our list of some (at times, surprising) real-life couples making it work off-camera.

Carrie Preston & Michael Emerson

The Elsbeth and Lost star met in 1994 while co-starring in a stage production of Hamlet in Montgomery, Alabama. Preston played Ophelia. Emerson played Guildenstern. Interestingly enough, their characters never speak to each other during the play.

After an initial misconception on Preston’s part, they cleared the air and fell in love. They married in 1998 and reside in New York City.

Full disclosure: Preston and Emerson inspired this list when I realized Elsbeth’s real-life husband played the villainous Judge Milton Crawford on Elsbeth Season 2.

Besides Emerson’s role on Elsbeth, the couple has collaborated several times on-screen.

Preston appeared on Person of Interest as Grace Hendricks, Emerson’s character, Harold Finch’s, former fiancée. Notably, their kiss on Person of Interest Season 1 Episode 22, “No Good Deed,” was the first time they kissed each other on-screen.

Before that recurring role, in 2007, Preston played Emily Linus on Lost Season 3 Episode 20, “The Man Behind the Curtain,” in a flashback. As she died giving birth to Ben, Emerson’s character, they never shared a scene.

Cobie Smulders & Taran Killam

Known best for playing Robin Scherbatsky on CBS‘s How I Met Your Mother, Cobie Smulders met future SNL cast member Taran Killam in 2005 at a mutual friend’s birthday party.

The next year, Killam appeared on How I Met Your Mother as Gary Blauman. His character would recur six times, most notably in the series finale double-episode wedding story, sparking a Code Red.

(CBS/Screenshot)

Married in 2012, they appeared together on a trio of Arrested Development episodes in 2019, portraying Young Lucille and Young George Sr.

Killam recently made our Double Duty list for holding down the position of awesome, supportive man in the background on both ABC‘s High Potential and NBC‘s Stumble (#RIP).

Meanwhile, Smulders reunited with HIMYM castmate Jason Segel on Apple TV’s Shrinking.

After their home in the Pacific Palisades was tragically destroyed in the 2025 fires, Smulders and Killam completed a new home in the Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada. They have two daughters.

Michelle Pfeiffer & David E. Kelley

(Courtesy of Apple TV)

My favorite Catwoman met her PURR-fect match when a mutual friend set her up on a blind date with TV writer and film producer, David E. Kelley, in 1993.

The first date went awkwardly by all accounts, with a group of friends and no real time to talk. However, the Ally McBeal creator followed up a couple of days later with a phone call requesting a second date with just the two of them.

They married by the end of that year. Kelley legally adopted Pfeiffer’s adopted daughter, and the couple welcomed a son in 1994.

Until Apple TV‘s Margo’s Got Money Troubles, they insisted on keeping their professional lives separate. But now there’s a second season in the works, so we assume Kelley will continue writing for Pfeiffer’s Shyanne Millet.

Christa Miller & Bill Lawrence

Speaking of Apple TV couples, actress Christa Miller and writer-producer Bill Lawrence are all about collaboration.

Since meeting at an ABC party in 1998, Miller has been a fixture on Lawrence’s hit shows, Scrubs, Cougar Town, and, most recently, Apple TV’s Shrinking.

(Screenshot/Apple TV)

A lesser-known fact is that Miller works as the music supervisor on many of Lawrence’s shows, including curating the soundtracks of Scrubs, Ted Lasso, and Shrinking.

They married a year after meeting and have three children, living primarily in Los Angeles while keeping a secondary home in New York City.

Nick Offerman & Megan Mullally

One of Hollywood’s most creative, hard-working, and prolific couples, Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally met in 2000 when working together on a stage production of The Berlin Circle at the Evidence Room Theater in Culver City.

Offerman soon guest-starred on Mullally’s hit sitcom Will & Grace in 2001, playing a hot plumber named… Nick? On the reboot in 2018, he played a totally different character, a hot celebrity baker not named Nick.

Turnabout’s fair play. When Offerman’s hit show Parks & Rec needed a Tammy Swanson II, Mullally fit the bill perfectly, sowing chaos whenever she appeared.

Married since 2003, they continuously work together in live theater, on podcasts, and in films. They co-wrote a book in 2018, The Greatest Love Story Ever Told: An Oral History, and are often heard voice-acting together on Bob’s Burgers, The Great North, and Hotel Transylvania 2.

They’ve even toured an intimate, raunchy, live musical show called Summer of 69 (No Apostrophe) in 2015-16. Currently, lucky Chicagoans can see their new collaboration, ICEBOY!, at the Goodman Theatre until August 9.

Kaitlin Olson & Rob Mac

There’s something to be said for falling in love with the boss. When Rob Mac (then McElhenney) cast Kaitlin Olson in FX‘s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia in 2005, he had no idea what was in store.

(Patrick McElhenney/FX)

After she reportedly took the initiative, they started dating in 2006 and got married in 2008. They have two sons and continue to work together on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which just finished filming its 18th season.

Both have stayed busy and relevant, with Olsen starring in ABC’s hit procedural High Potential and Mac taking on various projects, including four seasons of Apple TV’s Mythic Quest, the entertainment-tech company Adim, and the Irish American Whisky company Four Walls.

Most prominently, perhaps, is his co-ownership of Wrexham AFC with Ryan Reynolds, which unfolds in a heart-warming docu-series, Welcome to Wrexham. In the reality-based series, Olsen occasionally appears as part of Mac’s family.

Téa Leoni & Tim Daly

Another couple whose professional casting led to personal L-O-V-E is Téa Leoni and Tim Daly, who played husband and wife on CBS’s Madam Secretary.

Madam Secretary debuted in 2014, and the on-screen relationship between the titular Elizabeth McCord and her husband, Henry, set a high-water mark for loving, committed couples embroiled in politics.

Téa and Tim began seeing each other soon after Leoni’s divorce from David Duchovny was finalized. After a decade together, they married in 2025 in New York City, where they reside.

Leoni recently featured in the latest season of Hulu‘s Only Murders in the Building, while Daly appeared on the last season of Prime Video‘s The Boys as Rick January, Starlight’s father.

Mariska Hargitay & Peter Hermann

Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann met in 2002, when he guest-starred on Law & Order: SVU, on which Hargitay has starred since its premiere in 1999.

Famously, they went to a church service on their first date (on Peter’s invitation), where Mariska had an epiphany that he was “the one” for her.

They married two years later in Santa Barbara and now have three children. The family lives in New York City, where Law & Order: SVU is about to launch its 28th season.

Hargitay remains at the top of the call sheet as Captain Olivia Benson, with more SVU credits than anyone else on the cast.

After that first appearance as Defense Attorney Trevor Langan in 2002, Hermann has recurred on Law & Order: SVU more than 30 times over the years.

In addition, he starred in TV Land‘s Younger and appeared in 24 episodes of Blue Bloods as Jack Boyle, another prime-time defense attorney.

Harrison Ford & Calista Flockhart

May-December romances don’t get that many second looks these days, but when 60-year-old Harrison Ford and 38-year-old Calista Flockhart met at the 2002 Golden Globes and hit it off, it caused quite the stir.

(Trae Patton/Paramount+)

Eight years later, they married, and Ford legally adopted Flockhart’s son, Liam, bringing his kid count up to five.

They’ve never worked together on-screen, although Ford has said that he’d be willing to, given the right script, with the caveat that it would need to be a third party’s idea.

Most recently, Flockhart voiced April Howsam on Invincible Seasons 2 and 3. Additionally, she impressed audiences with her portrayal of Lee Radziwill on FX’s 2024 Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.

Meanwhile, Ford, at 83, is hitting his television stride, starring in two major productions over the past several years — two seasons of Paramount+‘s 1923 and three of Apple TV’s Shrinking.

Angela Bassett & Courtney B. Vance

A slow burn can be the best thing for a relationship. The same might be said for a shared history.

(Screenshot/NBC (Netflix))

Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance met as grad students at Yale School of Drama in 1980, but were never more than classmates.

When their paths crossed again in 1994, something lasting sparked, and in 1997, they tied the knot. They had a challenging journey to parenthood, but welcomed their twins in 2006 via surrogate.

Now in their 29th year of marriage, Bassett and Vance share a broad body of work they have collaborated on.

Besides establishing their own company, Bassett Vance Productions, and playing the Banfields on ER, they have starred together in several films, appeared together on stage, and co-written a book.

Currently, Bassett owns the spotlight regularly as Athena Grant-Nash on ABC’s 9-1-1, while Vance has recently donned the mantle of Zeus on Disney+‘s Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Ashton Kutcher & Mila Kunis

There are many reasons Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher didn’t fall for each other while playing Wisconsin teen power couple Jackie and Kelso on That ’70s Show in 1998, but the biggest was that Kunis was only 15.

Six years after the show ended and two celebrity break-ups later, they found themselves single and at the same awards show.

Two years later, Kunis married the first man she ever kissed, in real life and on-screen. Talk about full-circle.

Fast-forward to the present day, and Kunis is closing in on her 500th episode as the voice of Meg Griffin on FOX‘s long-running animated series Family Guy.

A far cry from Michael Kelso, Kutcher’s most recent role was that of Byron Forst, the richest man in the world, known only as The Corporation, on FX’s The Beauty.

Both Kunis and Kutcher reprised their That ’70s Show characters for delightful cameos on the sequel series, That ’90s Show.

Claire Danes & Hugh Dancy

(Focus Features/Screenshot)

Although it was the 2007 film, Evening, that brought them together, Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy have made enduring television characters their trademark.

Danes broke through as EveryGirl teen Angela Chase on ABC’s single season of My So-Called Life, but is probably best known now for the brilliantly obsessive CIA officer, Carrie Mathison on Showtime‘s Homeland.

Hugh Dancy will always be Hannibal‘s Will Graham to me, but nowadays, he’s made his home on Law & Order as ADA Nolan Price, who even makes appearances on Law & Order: SVU.

The couple met in 2006 while shooting Evening and married in 2009. Although Dancy joined Homeland as John Zabel in its final season, they shared no on-screen moments.

Kyra Sedgwick & Kevin Bacon

The longest-established couple on this list, their story reportedly goes back further than 1987, when they met on the set of Lemon Sky and got married the next year.

(Sony Pictures/Screenshot)

Apparently, Sedgwick saw Bacon in an off-Broadway play when she was 12, and he was 19. After the show, she approached him to tell him how much she’d enjoyed the performance, and he thanked her. Bacon has no memory of this first meeting.

Separately, they have anchored several long-running television series. Sedgwick starred on The Closer, while Bacon has headlined The Following, City on a Hill, and The Bondsman.

However, they have only worked together in films like 2025’s The Best You Can. This year, Bacon and Sedgwick share the director’s chair on Family Movie. Not only that, but their kids, Sosie and Travis, join them on-screen.

Bacon and Sedgwick split their time between their long-time residence in New York, their farmhouse in Connecticut (where they shelter rescued farm animals 😍), and a home in Los Angeles.

Tatiana Maslany & Brendan Hines

Just because you’re high-profile doesn’t mean your personal life is an open book. Case in point: Tatiana Maslany and Brendan Hines.

(Courtesy of Apple TV)

It shouldn’t be too surprising that the queen of chameleon-like performances was effectively stealth about keeping her love life off the public radar.

The Orphan Black and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law star was first romantically linked to Hines in 2020. They were spotted at a dinner together with Tim Roth in 2021.

The next thing we know, Maslany announced during an August 2022 interview on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert that she and Hines had tied the knot during the pandemic.

They’ve worked together on the Power Trip podcast and the upcoming film, The Young People.

Maslany currently stars on Apple TV’s Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed and was recently featured on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Hines recurs on Chicago Med as Dr. Nicholas Hayes.

Alison Brie & Dave Franco

Alison Brie proved her versatility early in her career when she did double duty by portraying straight-laced housewife Trudy Campbell on AMC‘s Mad Men at the same time as playing Community‘s Annie Edison.

Dave Franco burst onto the scene with his breakout role as frat-boy-surgeon-wannabe Cole Aaronson on Scrubs Season 9. Most recently, he recurred as himself on Apple TV’s The Studio.

Reportedly, they met by chance at the 2011 New Orleans Mardi Gras celebration. After getting married in 2017, they collaborated on several projects, including the 2025 body-horror film Together.

While they often travel for work, they share a permanent home base in Los Angeles with their cats, Otis and Max.

Leslie Bibb & Sam Rockwell

Together since 2007, when they met at the luxurious Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, Bibb and Rockwell established early on that neither of them desired marriage or children.

Bibb’s television credits are extensive. They include her breakout role as Brooke McQueen on Popular, as well as regular roles on Line of Fire, Crossing Jordan, and GCB.

(Lionsgate/Screenshot)

Most recently, she starred on Palm Royale and the third season of The White Lotus, and appeared in the final season of Hacks.

Rockwell is better known for his work in film. This includes winning an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and two SAG awards for playing Jason Dixon in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

He has been more selective with his television roles. In 2019, he took on the iconic role of Bob Fosse in FX’s Fosse/Verdon. Since 2015, he has provided the voice of Vic Reynolds on F is for Family on Netflix.

Bibb and Rockwell have appeared together in films like Iron Man 2 and Don Verdean. However, when Rockwell guested on Bibb’s season of The White Lotus, they had no scenes together.

They live with their beloved German Shepherd, Gus, in New York City’s East Village. And since buying a 1750s-era country home in New York’s Hudson Valley in 2024, they have also spent a lot of time renovating it.

Sarah Paulson & Holland Taylor

Despite their 32-year age gap, Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor have never let the numbers tell the story. Their relationship defines commitment and support.

(ELIZA MORSE/NETFLIX)

They met initially in 2005. Back then, they were both in relationships with other people. A few years later, they reconnected via social media.

In 2015, they went public with their relationship. Since then, they frequently appear together at red-carpet events and galas.

In interviews and at special occasions, they gush about each other’s achievements and talents, unabashedly in love and not afraid to express it with eloquence and tenderness.

Since her epic role of Evelyn Harper on Two and a Half Men, Taylor’s played major characters on Mr. Mercedes and The Morning Show. She’s recently joined the all-star cast of Prime Video’s Scarpetta.

Meanwhile, Paulson’s been a cornerstone cast member on FX’s American Horror Story franchise for over 15 years.

(FX/Screenshot)

Additionally, she delights us with occasional appearances on The Bear, and with All’s Fair Season 2 greenlit and in production, she’ll be just as busy as Taylor for the foreseeable future.

To date, they have not worked together on-screen, although they’ve considered performing together on stage in the future.

It’s interesting to note that the women still maintain separate homes. Despite that independent lifestyle, they spend all their time together, alternating between houses.

Ben McKenzie & Morena Baccarin

The road of romance takes many twists and turns before running true. As far back as 2006, Morena Baccarin and Ben McKenzie’s paths were on a collision course.

Here TodayHere Today
(Giovanni Rufino/FOX)

The first fly-by was on McKenzie’s first big show, The O.C. Baccarin appeared on three episodes as Maya Griffin, but nothing came of it. McKenzie allegedly doesn’t remember meeting her at that time.

It would be nearly ten years later before she joined Gotham as Dr. Leslie Tompkins. After meeting in 2014 and welcoming a baby girl in 2016, they married in 2017.

Since hanging up his badge as Commissioner Jim Gordon, McKenzie has turned his attention to writing and directing, occasionally taking on a film role.

Meanwhile, Baccarin lit up the big screen as Vanessa in the Deadpool movies, then pivoted back to television in the role of Mickey Fox. Introduced on CBS’s Fire Country, Fox became the central character on the first spinoff series, Sheriff Country.

The couple makes their home with their three children in New York City.

Matthew Rhys & Keri Russell

Not the first couple (not even on this list!) to turn art into life, Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell fell in love while playing married Russian spies on FX’s The Americans.

In another instance of stars aligning, they first met in the early 2000s when Rhys drunkenly asked for her phone number.

Fifteen years later, he still remembered that clearly, while she had to be reminded when they met again on The Americans.

Since The Americans, both Rhys and Russell have gone on to anchor major TV productions. Russell currently stars on Netflix’s The Diplomat, while Apple TV recently renewed Rhys’s comedic supernatural horror series Widow’s Bay for a second season.

Fun fact: the only other collaborative project they’ve done is Cocaine Bear in 2023.

They have never married but have a son together and co-parent Russell’s two children from her marriage to Shane Deary. They live in Brooklyn, New York.
