ABC announced today that it’s renewed Bachelor In Paradise for a tenth season.
The news comes just days after the premiere of a new season of The Bachelorette starring Jenn Tran.
The Bachelor/Bachelorette is one of the longest-running franchises in the world of reality television, having kicked off way back in 2002.
The renewal of BiP confirms that ABC is all-in on its perennial ratings juggernaut.
In addition to a new season of The Bachelorette, the network is currently developing the first season of The Golden Bachelorette.
That’s a spinoff of The Golden Bachelor, which debuted to decent ratings and mixed reviews earlier this year.
The series’ star — a 72-year-old widower named Gerry Turner — found love with a contestant named Theresa Nist.
But Gerry and Theresa got divorced just a few months after their televised wedding.
The Bachelor franchise doesn’t have the greatest track record when it comes to creating lasting, long-term relationships.
But that’s never bothered fans, and it certainly shouldn’t impact the ongoing popularity of Bachelor In Paradise, which has always been the fun, frivolous, hookup-centric entry in the franchise.
Longtime BiP bartender Wells Adams recently joked about the possibility of a senior version.
“Everyone’s very, very happy about the success of The Golden Bachelor. It makes sense that the next thing would be Golden Bachelorette and, ipso sexo, a Golden Bachelor in Paradise,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
“It needs to happen in Florida at Del Boca Vista [from Seinfeld]. Everyone needs to drive around in golf carts, dates at shuffleboard courts,” Adams added.
“I need to be making drinks but also have Mylanta on the side.”
So yeah, Bachelor in Paradise is not a show that takes itself too seriously, and it can probably continue its run as a silly summer spinoff for many years to come.
In fact, we might need its sweaty brand of absurdity now more than ever.
