One Tree Hill Sequel Series In Development at Netflix
It’s almost time to head back to coastal North Carolina!
Variety is reporting today that a One Tree Hill sequel series is in development at Netflix.
The surprising news comes more than 12 years after the original show wrapped its nine-season run on the WB and the CW.
Sources tell Variety that the sequel will be produced by One Tree Hill stars Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton, and Daneel Ackles.
Ackles will executive produce as part of Chaos Machine, the company she co-owns with her husband, Jensen Ackles.
Warner Bros. TV, which produced the original series is also on board for the sequel.
It’s unclear if other series stars, such as Chad Michael Murray and James Lafferty will be involved in any way.
Variety has confirmed that Bush and Burton intend to reprise their original roles.
The outlet reports that Ackles is “in talks” to return to star to the Netflix series as an actor.
It’s a little confusing that she’s producing but hasn’t yet worked out if she’ll also acting on the series.
We suppose that’s just one more indication that pre-production is still in its very early stages.
Anyway, details are very scarce at the moment, but excitement in the One Tree Hill-obsessed corners of social media is already sky-high.
The show developed a cultish following during its original run, so despite the years that have elapsed since it last aired, the sequel news doesn’t come as a total shock.
And while it always received mixed reviews, OTH has since gone under somewhat of a critical reappraisal.
Entertainment Weekly recently listed the show as one of the greatest teen dramas of all time, and multiple outlets have praised the show’s performances and overall character development.
So here’s hoping the upcoming sequel can recapture some of that magic.
It might be a while before we have any concrete news regarding the cast or release date, but we’ll keep you updated as new information becomes available.
