Rebecca Ferguson Cast in Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Mercy’
Preview:
- Rebecca Ferguson is joining Chris Pratt in ‘Mercy’.
- Timur Bekmambetov will direct the movie.
- Amazon MGM Studios will release this one in theaters.
With ‘Dune: Part Two’ doing big business in theaters ($81.2 million launch domestically, more than $178 million worldwide after one weekend on release), naturally other studios and companies are looking to secure the services of the cast.
If we’re honest, though, Rebecca Ferguson doesn’t really need the help –– her career is motoring along perfectly healthily by itself.
The latest evidence? She’s scored a starring role alongside Chris Pratt in new Amazon MGM Studios sci-fi thriller ‘Mercy’.
What’s the story of ‘Mercy’?
The new movie is set in the near future when capital crime has increased. It follows a detective (Pratt) who is accused of a violent crime and forced to prove his innocence.
It all sounds like a version of ‘Minority Report’ with the psychic crime predicting element stripped out, but we’ll wait and see what the spin is here.
As for who Ferguson plays, Deadline’s story on her casting makes no mention of her character.
Who is making ‘Mercy’?
Timur Bekmambetov will direct the new movie, working from a script by Marco van Belle (‘Arthur & Merlin’). And prolific producer Charles Roven set the project up via his Atlas Entertainment company
It marks a reunion for the director and Pratt, as the latter had a role in 2008 action thriller ‘Wanted’, which marked the Russian filmmaker’s first Hollywood movie.
And unlike ‘The Tomorrow War’, Pratt’s last film for Amazon, which went to Prime Video, ‘Mercy’ will be released in theaters.
Amazon MGM Studios head Jennifer Salke appears enthused by the prospect, telling Deadline:
“From the moment Chuck Roven brought us ‘Mercy’ and we read Marco van Belle’s script, we knew the film was meant for the big screen. As our relationship with ‘The Terminal List’ and ‘The Tomorrow War’s Chris Pratt continues to extend across film, we can’t wait to watch him bring this action-packed story to life, guided by Chuck and the vision of director Timur Bekmambetov. We could not imagine a better star and filmmaking team to execute on and deliver what is sure to be a gripping thrill ride and look forward to audiences being able to experience it in theaters.â€
What else will we see Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson starring in?
Pratt is typically busy, with the lead voice role in the upcoming ‘The Garfield Movie’ (due out May 24th) and the Russo brothers’ sci-fi movie ‘The Electric State’ and working on ‘The Terminal List’ prequel series ‘Dark Wolf’.
Ferguson only really has ‘Mercy’ on her schedule at the moment, and barring flashbacks, seems unlikely to appear in the next ‘Mission: Impossible’ (shot back-to-back with ‘Dead Reckoning’) since (spoiler alert!) Ilsa Faust dies in ‘Dead Reckoning’.
