One of the most controversial murder trials of the 1990s is heading to HBO. The Trial of Louise Woodward, a five-episode true-crime limited series, will revisit the 1997 case of Louise Woodward, an 18-year-old British au pair accused of fatally shaking an infant in her care while working for a Massachusetts family.

The case sparked an international media frenzy, with the trial dominating headlines in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Beyond the courtroom drama, the series will explore issues of childcare, social class, and the growing influence of 24-hour television news coverage on public opinion.

“The trial of Louise Woodward raised profound questions about childcare, working mothers, class, and the role of an emerging 24/7 media. Thirty years later, those questions feel more urgent and relevant than ever. I’m grateful to be working with Susanne and our partners at HBO to bring this story, in all its complexity, to the screen,” states showrunner Matthew Barry.

Here is everything we know about the upcoming limited series so far.

What is The Trial of Louise Woodward about?

The HBO limited series is about the 1997 trial of Louise Woodward, an 18-year-old British au pair accused of shaking eight-month-old Matthew Eappen to death in Massachusetts.

The official logline reads: “The series tells the shocking true story of how, in 1997, an 18-year-old British au pair was accused of shaking to death a baby left in her care by her American host family, setting off an international media firestorm as the trial unfolds in full view of both the British and American public.”

Who stars in The Trial of Louise Woodward?

The series stars Catriona Chandler as Louise Woodward, Meghann Fahy as Deborah Eappen, and Sagar Radia as Sunil Eappen, along with Hugh Laurie, Chloë Sevigny, Joanne Froggatt, Jack Reynor, David Krumholtz, Natalia Dyer, and John Magaro.

What happened during the actual trial of Louise Woodward?

The 1997 trial of British au pair Louise Woodward became an international media sensation after she was accused of killing eight-month-old Matthew Eappen while caring for him in Massachusetts. Prosecutors argued that Woodward had violently shaken the infant, pointing to bleeding in his brain and eyes, along with brain swelling, as evidence of shaken baby syndrome (SBS). However, her defense team, led by attorney Barry Scheck, challenged the medical findings and emphasized the lack of bruising that might be expected from such a violent act.

In a risky legal move, Woodward’s defense rejected the option of a lesser manslaughter charge, betting that jurors would acquit her rather than convict her of murder. The strategy backfired, and on October 30, 1997, Woodward was found guilty of second-degree murder and faced a mandatory life sentence.

However, the case took a dramatic turn just 11 days later. Judge Hiller B. Zobel reduced the conviction to involuntary manslaughter, determining that Woodward’s actions stemmed from inexperience and immaturity rather than malice. He sentenced her to the 279 days she had already served, allowing her to walk free.
