Weekend Box Office: ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Stays Top

While Spidey briefly gave up his box office throne on Friday to new horror title ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ (the sixth entry in that franchise, for those keeping count), ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ was back on top by the end of the weekend with $39 million.
Sony, which co-produces the Spidey films with Marvel, has reason to be happy –– the studio is also behind the ‘Insidious’ movies. This newest outing took in $25.3 million for second place.

The new arrival actually pushed ‘The Odyssey’ to third, with Christopher Nolan’s epic adding $19.5 million.

The rest of the top five places were filled with the returning likes of ‘Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie’ and ‘The End of Oak Street.’
Though Jason Statham was back at the box office with action movie ‘Mutiny,’ he couldn’t infiltrate the top five, making do with sixth place and $7.5 million. Fellow new release, comedy pic ‘Spa Weekend,’ faltered, landing in ninth with $3 million.
