Which Couples Are Still Together Going Into Season 4

HBO

Heading into Season 4, The Gilded Age‘s romances just keep getting more and more complicated. The HBO period drama saw more than one breakup in Season 3, between Bertha (Carrie Coon) and George (Morgan Spector), as well as Marian (Louisa Jacobson) and Larry (Harry Richardson).

Yet, by the end of Season 3, we also saw several engagements and marriages. What’s more, quite a few relationship statuses weren’t completely clear. With how many twists and turns there were to keep track of, it’s completely understandable if some of the details are murky. Ahead of Season 4’s premiere, get the full The Gilded Age relationships recap below.

Are Marian and Larry still together?

Short answer? No… but also yes, kind of? After two failed engagements in just as many seasons, Marian Brooks kisses Larry Russell at the end of Season 2, and they begin Season 3 as a couple. Their relationship isn’t without its problems, though. They decide to keep their relationship slow and secret at the start, both due to Marian’s past experience and her Russells-hating Aunt Agnes (Christine Baranski).

Around mid-way through the season, Marian and Larry get engaged, much to Agnes and Bertha’s dismay. They break up only two episodes later when Marian catches Larry in a lie. On the night of their engagement, Larry went to the not-quite-respectable Haymarket establishment with his friends, but rather than the tamer Delmonicos club like he led Marian to believe.

Marian doesn’t believe that nothing untoward happened like Larry claims. After calling off their engagement, Marian realizes her mistake when someone else backs up Larry’s story, but Larry is peeved that Marian doesn’t trust him. How can they move forward without trust?

Both Larry and Marian apologize at the Russells’ ball in the finale, but the outcome of their conversation is vague. They basically put a pin in it, deciding that not all of their problems can be solved in one night.

Are Bertha and George still together?

Bertha and George Russell may have entered the New York social scene as a new money power couple, but their relationship is a casualty of their rise to the top. In Season 2, Bertha stops at nothing to win the Opera War, using her husband’s funds.

Yet, Bertha forcing their daughter, Gladys (Taissa Farmiga), into an arranged marriage with the Duke of Buckingham, Hector (Ben Lamb), is what does her relationship with George in. George is pro-love match, while Bertha tries to justify her machinations as a way to help her daughter escape a cage.

In the Season 3 finale, Bertha thinks that George’s return for her ball means they can start to fix things, but he shoots that line of thinking down. George explains that he can’t forgive Bertha for what she did to Gladys. He’s only ruthless with his business, not with the people he loves. Bertha knows she wants George to come home and start anew, but George doesn’t know what he wants yet.

Are Peggy and Dr. William Kirkland still together?

The strongest couple going into Season 4 is undoubtedly Peggy (Denée Benton) and Dr. William Kirkland (Jordan Donica), who start dating a few episodes into Season 3 after William treats Peggy during her sickness. She’s left her Season 2 love interest, married newspaper editor T. Thomas Fortune (Sullivan Jones), behind.

Like Marian and Larry, Peggy and William face problems with each other’s families. Mrs. Kirkland (Phylicia Rashad) is at the top of the social ladder amongst the Black community in Newport, Rhode Island. When she meets Peggy’s parents, Mrs. Kirkland expresses concerns over Peggy’s darker skin, her father formerly being enslaved, and her writing career. When Mrs. Kirkland learns of Peggy’s previous voided marriage and loss of her child, she tries to convince her son to end things.

William, however, accepts Peggy’s past. He follows his heart and defies his mother in the Season 3 finale. At the Newport ball in front of their society peers, William proposes to her on one knee in the middle of the dance floor. Could that mean their wedding is in the near future?

Are Gladys and the Duke still together?

Even though their marriage started out as a loveless one, things took a turn for the better for Gladys and the Duke. Thanks to her mother and failed relationship with banker Billy Carlton (Matt Walker), Gladys weds the Duke, who needs her dowry, about halfway through Season 3.

However, by the end of the season, Gladys has found her footing as a Duchess and is happy to be pregnant with Hector’s baby.

Are Oscar and Enid still together?

This one isn’t a romance, but Oscar van Rhijn (Blake Ritson) and Enid Winterton (Kelly Curran) have come to an agreement to enter a lavender marriage.
